Post subject:  disc brake spindle part help

hey everyone,

as I was trying to get the entire front end back together and mounted, I realized that one side was missing the seal that slides onto the spindle and covers the inner wheel bearing. I looked on partsamerica and rockauto and could not find it. is it normally bundled with the bearing itself?

Also, in that vein, does anyone have pictures of a cordoba style caliper mounted? Specifically, how the slider clips bolt on and hold the brake pads?

thanks in advance

MJ

Which spindle/rotor are you talking about?

Do you mean the inner oil seal? No, it's usually not bundled with anything.
BCA Part # 5121 for a '74 Duster, my brake donor.
Rock Auto has them for a couple of bucks.
It is installed into the hub, not onto the knuckle.

You mention that one was missing. You really should replace both. Cheap insurance.

Menko,

Are we talking about the seal that presses into the brake rotor to keep the grease in and most everything else out? Seals on the large OD of the spindle? If so that's on Rockauto.com under Brake/Wheel Hub BCA 5121.

I really dislike the pin type calipers. Have someone step on the brakes while you watch the caliper. You'll see the caliper twist on those rubber bushings and know immediately why you have a soft brake pedal.

Thanks all, didn't realize that seal pressed into the rotor. They were attached to the spindles when I got them, so I didn't realize it went on the rotor. I'll pick up 2 just for fun.
its the big seal in this picture that slides over the spindle's OD.

Josh, I've got the sliders from a 79 cordoba. Any tricks to those I need to be aware of?

My other question was relating to how these little metal plates bolt on to hold the pads as shown in this pic:

I think I have it all setup. However, I mounted the calipers in the back, so I've still go to figure out my fun hose routing. Might be time for Tim to make a set for me that have a little more length than the A body ones.

Then I have to figure out how big of a spacer I need up front. Josh did you have the mustang wheels with a .5" spacer?

thanks. I'll try to remember to take my camera so you guys can see all the mistakes I made ;)

Yep, seal goes in the rotor just like with the drum brakes. The seals don't get reused once they've been removed unless you're really poor.

Sliders are good. Put just a smear of grease on the sliding part and put the caliper on the adapter. The spring clips just go over the top and push down on the caliper to keep it from rattling.

If the brake hard lines are in front of the spindle then putting the caliper toward the back is fine. Ideally the brake hose crosses behind the spindle. It actually reduces the flexing of the hose.

If you have A body spindles you may not need a spacer up front. I have F-body spindles on my Dart (they might come off) and need about a 3/8" spacer.

yeah the hardlines are behind the spindle, but I flipped them to avoid front swaybar interference. maybe i'll have to pull that whole thing back apart--we'll see.

Thanks for the info, i'll take some pictures next time to show it to you guys.
