The large input shaft / big hub version is the way to go, 1968 and up.

You need to decide if you want a low first gear (wide ratio) which started in 1981. Avoid the lock-up torque converter units if you are going for high performance.

Wide bands, more clutch discs and 4 pinion planetary gears are in the V8 version of the 904 and these parts can be swapped into a SL6 904 to make a super HD unit.
