Got a call from a buddy. There's a pile of engine parts behind his warehouse thats been sitting there for a couple of years... He says if I want them, haul them out of there. Being a pack-rat, I tell him I'll at least take a look. Grabbed the dog, and combined business with pleasure. Walk the dog; Business, and look at a pile of stuff; pleasure. Most of a 3.8L fuel injection system... Harness. Hmmmmm. The rustiest 2.3 ford, in pieces, that I've seen since diving off Guam. Yawn. Hmmmmm. Fuel injection.... But... Is it Ford or GM? I think it's Ford. The intake has a curve to it that doesn't look like any Buick I've ever seen. Can I use Ford stuff for my stroker, or would I be better served providing the scrap peddler with this stuff, and holding out for Buick FI stuff? If I can use the ford FI, I know where another complete Fuel injection system is that I can have. Just don't have any visibility on what's useful, and what's useless. Made the evening dog walking more interesting anyway! CJ |

The injectors are likely to be of a suitable size. And the throttle body will probably be all right too. You can piece together EFI systems from all sorts of odds and ends if you look in the right places. I'm using a GM ignition, Ford 4.6 V8 throttle body, Toyota Supra injectors, and a late '80s Ford truck fuel pump. Had a Nissan 280ZX fuel pressure regulator in there, too, but that sprung a leak and I replaced it with an aftermarket unit. Of course, I used a Megasquirt ECU, which isn't too picky about off the wall mixing and matching. But the ECU may be a bit tricky. A GM HEI distributor uses a pickup that, from an electrical standpoint, is virtually identical to the Mopar unit. Most injected 3.8 Fords use a Hall effect distributor. You can probably feed a signal from the negative terminal of the coil (or an MSD tach out line) to get it to control the fuel while the distributor handles timing, but I'm not 100% sure. I do know, however, that getting computer controlled spark with this is going to be a gurus only project. Also, depending on the year, that may be a sequential system that expects an input from a camshaft position sensor. I'm not entirely sure what it would do if it doesn't get the signal from that. |
