The stock starter will do the job just fine, but, if you need clearance for headers, the mini starter provides much more room. I have one on the slant in my '87 D150. It spins the engine over (seemingly) much faster than the stock starter. If your stock starter is working fine, and you do not need the extra clearance, I would spend your money elsewhere. If you decide to get a mini-starter, don't get it from ebay. Go to a junkyard and pull a starter from any 92-01 truck, dakota, or van with a magnum V6 or V8. You will save a few bucks and most likely end up with a better quality starter. |

Yeah, be advised, most of the "new" starters on eBay are Chinese-made copycat garbage, not the genuine Nippondenso item. And most of what you get at the parts store is "remanufactured" garbage. Best to get a good used one out of a wrecking yard. Only thing that ever goes wrong with them is the solenoid contacts, and those are easy to fix. |

Like was said, got to the bone yard and get one. I have 3 boneyard starters on mine and soon to be a 4th, and let me tell ya. With the 3, I have a total cost of $40 in them and have been in service now for a total of 6 years. Not bad for junk parts if ya ask me. Yea, I do miss the rattlely sound, especially on the /6, but boy does that thing spin! |

My compression is around 9.8-1 and if the car didn't start by the 3rd hit if the key with the stock starter the battery was to weak to turn the engine over any more. With the mini starter I can crank it for 5 minutes and still ot kill the battery. Cost at Harry's U-pull-it $14. |

so in other words, yes, it does work better for the higher compression.mine is actually 10.5 to 1

It Would Seem That A Starter Prefixed By 'Mini', Or 'Small' Would Weigh Less Than A Stock Unit.. Is This An Accurate Assumption? (Trying To Shave Some Weight For A Corner-Carver) Thanks For Any Input... Seth |

yes, they weigh considerably less. I have heard a 7 pound difference, but I can't verify that. best bet would be to go to a local store and put them side by side. don't buy them there though....... |
