I would like to put an 8 1/4 surgrip rear on my 66 drag Cuda. What would be a good donor car? I not looking to do a Major rebuild on the axles etc. The motor and tranny a targeted to be a 12sec car. Also if anyone has any gear ratio reccomendations. thanks Frank |

A Volare or Aspen might have what you are looking for, although beware of those that have gears higher than 2.76. They have a different housing and can not be geared lower. I would check mid 70's mainly, that is before the gear ratios got ridiculoulsy tall. If you plan on narrowing your rear, then most 1980s Dodge pickups have an 8 1/4 or 9 1/4. 250's and 350's were 8 lug models though, stay away from those. Or you could get a 9 inch Ford. You'll never break it. |

For a 12 sec car, depending on tire size, you will want a ratio of about 4.30-4.56-4.88 |

If you get lucky to find one:Any 1973-1976 Duster,Dart, Valiant, Dart Sport with a 10 bolt round rear cover will be a good core...if the car is OEM and has disc brakes and a 3 speed manual on the floor then it will most likely have the 8 1/4" if it's still all original. -D.Idiot |

There are several listed in car-part.com. Look for a 74 Dart with a 10-bolt rear axle. |

? when replacing a 7 1/4 with a 8 1/4 from an A-body the driveshaft will need to be shorten. Does anyone know how much for my Barracuda? Also is the u-joint the same for the 8 1/4? |
