So, I have what many of you may consider a silly question. I think I already know the answer, but I guess I'm just looking for a little reassurance. I have an '83 D150 with a 225 and a four-speed manual tranny, now for the question...I want to swap out a 225 from a '63 valiant, I should be able to keep the 4-speed in and make a clean swap right? Or will I have to replace the tranny too? Thanks in advance. |

You mean you want to swap the '63 engine in to the truck, right? Make sure the crank in the '63 engine is drilled to accept a pilot bushing. You will want to do some checking and measuring as regards oil pan fitment. The '63 pan will probably fit and work OK in the truck, but check it. |

Yes, I want to put the '63 in the truck. I think the oil pan won't be an issue, but what size and depth does the crank have to be drilled to accept a pilot bushing? Probably something I'd have to take to a machine shop huh? Maybe I can get the auto tranny with the engine and just swap the whole thing. How would that be for towing though? This is for my work truck, so I'll be carrying heavy loads from time to time. Thanks again! |

Somebody else's gonna have to answer this!Quote: Maybe I can get the auto tranny with the engine and just swap the whole thing
The '63 auto trans won't fit or work in your truck without major fabrication.Quote: How would that be for towing though? A well-prepped automatic is generally better than an A833OD for towing. |

The 63 225 will have a smaller crank register where the flywheel bolts-on.You will have to use a special spacer to adapt the 83's flywheel or find a 62-67 "small hub" flywheel to use with the small hub crank. Make sure the pilot bushing hole is reamed to finished size or use the special "problem solver" pilot bushing offered for use with un-reamed holes. DD |
