Post subject:  Front Drum Swap For Bigger Bolt Pattern

can you chnge the front drums out on a 63 A body to drums with the large bolt pattern from a later model or do the spindles have to be changed also?

thanks GRT

Every '63 I've seen had 9" drums so you have to change the spindles to use anything else. Well, there is the Scarebird disc conversion for those spindles, but it's small bolt pattern.

There is aftermarket Disk brake kits made work with the spindle of the 9in drum brakes.

I heard many years ago that certain AMC drums (particualrly
Gremlin) would fit, but don't know whether that was 9" or 10"
or both. And good luck finding any now. But it was an easy way of
going to BBP.

Not sure about 9" drums, but Moser redrilled a set of 10" front drums and hubs to BBP for me.

IIRC, they said they can do 9" fronts too.

They drill for screw-in studs so the holes are smaller than for a press-in stud.

If you use 62 to 72 B Body spindles, you can use said years backing plates and drums. This will get you larger 10 in or even 11 in LBP brakes. The reasoning behind this is that since 73-76 A Body disc spindles are the same dimensionally as 62-72 B Body and 63-72 A Body spindles, they would be a direct fit. Also gotta use the UCA and larger ball joint from 73-76 A Bodies.
