The 225 Super six in my newly acquired '79 Aspen wagon has exactly ZERO emission components left on it. Somebody before me has stripped off everything. The EGR valve is still in place, simply to fill the hole, I think.

Dan tells me that the carb now on the engine is a service replacement BBD. It was always my understanding that the carbs on the EGR engines were jetted a little richer to make up for the dilution of the mixture caused by the EGR valve cycling.

So now that I have no emissions stuff to deal with, should the carb be re-jetted a little leaner and if so, what's the optimal size? The object of the exercise is fuel economy.

I'll be sticking an MSD6 and Blaster Coil to light whatever the carb passes along, so I should be able to fire just about anything burnable.

I'm not aware of richer-for-EGR jetting. You can play around with the jetting on your BBD a little; yours is the later type that takes the same shorty jets as the AFB, so jets are out there. But I think you'll find the BBD with stock jetting and without EGR will return good mileage for you and there'll be very limited or nonexistent mileage gains to be had by leaning out the carb, but on the other hand you stand to lose a great deal of driveability.

I'm not a fan of carter carbs, but I'd play with the needles. Sometimes those carter jets are hard to remove and you end up screwing a good core. And if you play your cards right with the needles, you'd get good economy and power... OR.... get a Holley! (sorry dan)

So if playing with the needles is preferable to trying to R&R the jets, are the needles also common to the AFB carb ?
