Post subject:  Exhaust System

Hey everyone,
I have question about exhaust systems. I'm in the process of buying some dutra duals and i was wondering what i should do for the exhaust system. Power, appearance and cost are all priorities. What should i do? Two into one? dual exhaust? i like the look of dual exahaust but if its not gonna give me any more power or anything like that then i see no reason to pay more for it. What kind of muffler should i use?
My engine is a super six 170.
Thanks everyone,
Allen

I was thinking about this yesterday. My thought is to come out of the manifolds with 1 7/8 or 2" pipe then bring them together into a 2 1/4 or 2 1/2" pipe to the muffler. I don't have the duals yet but they are on my list for when I get the car running again.

Yeah thats what i kinda figured id end up doing as well. I didn't think the dual exhaust thing would be very cost effective. Can anyone recommend a muffler then? i hear the magnaflows are good...
Good luck on the car david.

I haven't decided on a muffler yet. I have a Flowmaster on the Dakota and it works well for that application. I have plenty of time to decide that issue.

Dual exhaust will NOT give you any gains, in fact may give you a power if the pipes are routed incorrectly! Also with a dual exhaust you get alot of drone at highway speed! My SRT-4 has dual exhaust(stock)and it drones like 5 bee hives at once :x Splitting the exhaust (like with the dutra duals) then bringing them together with a nice y pipe(mandrel bent ONLY!) will give you awesome performance and sound, and less likely to drone!

Unless you really cant stand to hear your exhaust,NEVER put a flowmaster or and baffled muffler on your car! Straight through design is the only way to go! My brother had a set of flowmasters on his car,and we swapped them out for a straight through magnaflow muffler (same case size, and the same inlet/outlet diameter!)then strapped it on a dyno. He picked up 9 RWHP with just a muffler change! I have seen it numerous times, people swap out baffled mufflers for straight through muffler; 9 times out of ten they gain at least 3 h.p!

But a straight through muffler will be much louder! I have owned daily drivers where I ran straight pipes, and it does not bother me,so take that into consideration!

Also if you are going to get an exhaust system you may as well get a 2.5 inch pipe! Especially if it is a crush bent system! MY .02

On my Dart, I was running Dutra duals with dual 2 inch pipes. I had an H-pipe crossover just at the rear of the transmission. The system used two generic "turbo" mufflers. This exhaust system seemed to work very well with a 2 bbl. carburetor, but I often wondered if a single system would work better. One advantage of a single system over a dual is the weight savings of the single pipe system.
