Hi folks,

Haven't posted in a long time but enjoy reading along. I am still working on the timing cover leak that sprung in June, and got ill enough at it to just quit and rewire the ole truck, add in relays and gages and enjoy sitting up instead of lying on my back.

But with onset of cooler weather I am again inspired. MY engine and clutch have about 75 miles on them. After jacking up the vehicle again I pulled the oil pan, timing chain cover, and clutch inspection pan. I decided to go on to the chattering clutch problem because I was pulling the pan to see if the rear main seal was leaking. Well, there is a thin coat of black greasy stuff in the clutch inspection pan but none in the bellhousing. My clutch began chattering with fewer than 10 miles on it.

What would a failed main seal look like in terms of oil at 10 to 75 miles...and where? On the crankshaft flange? I know I didn't get fingerprints on the clutch disc and I don't see any obvious oil or grease on either the flywheel or pressure plate.

Is it possible the small amount of lube I put on the input shaft of the 833OD to help the throwout bearing slide somehow leaked out onto the clutch disc? Is it possible the finger of grease I put in the end of crankshaft behind the roller bearing for the input shaft leaked through the bearing onto the clutch? I am trying to avoid pulling the tranny til I have to, knowing I will sooner or later, but I don't want to err the same way again. ANy ideas?

Thanks
