Hi folks, Been a long time since posting, but that is because I caused myself a clutch problem in July and it was so hot and the skeeters were so tough I said the heck with it, I will wait til it cools down. Well, it plummeted to 28 degrees, so might as well get with the cure. Basically after about 50 miles on brand new clutch, pressure plate, newly surfaced flywheel and new TOB, my clutch started chattering. I also had an oil leak at the front of the timing chain cover so didn't know if I had oil flying into the new A833 bellhousing, or if the tranny input seal was leaking (new rebuilt by me) or if the rear main seal was leaking, or what. Well, last nite I pulled the tranny. Found only a streak of dark grease across the inspection pan under the clutch and no oil or grease thrown around inside bell. (Only iles on the set). When I pulled out the tranny , grease was thick on the input shaft. I had liberally greased it to be sure the TOB would slide well, and also put about a tablespoon of high temp grease inside the crankshaft inside the needle bearing adapter. Grease was filling the space between the TOB and the input shaft. Do you think I simply put grease where none was needed and it got warm and ran into clutch If a TOB needs NO grease, I sure did the wrong thing! Since I trashed a new disc and pressure plate I want to get opinions before I re assemble. I don't like doing this so much I feel like doing it every 50 miles. Thanks! rock '64d100 |

Yeah....you outgreased yourself. Clean the grease off of the input shaft and pressure plate, get a new disc and go from there. Don't put any lube on the input shaft....remember, it spins at engine speed when clutch is engaged. I know of no grease that can cling to a component when that part is spinning at 2500 rpm. I don't think you need to worry too much about the crank bushing/bearing. The nose of the input should keep any messes at bay. Roger |
