bought a new carb, carter bbd for a 318, and it runs great, much smoother idle, better power. only problem is the choke plate doesn't move smoothly. it picks up tension as i push it towards full open and i have to use a fair amount of force to push it back to the closed position. as i type i have just increased the spring tension on my choke, but i know this plate should move much more freely. i hit it with some pb blaster at both shafts but that didn't seem to help any. :?

The V8 carburetors have a choke lever (where the choke rod hooks up) that is configured differently to the slant-6 lever. You can in some cases hook the slant-6 choke rod to the V8 lever, but it will bind up (as you're experiencing) and not work correctly. Depending on exactly what carburetor you bought (what year 318 is it for? Where'd you get it? Is it really new, or is it a "remanufactured" unit from the parts store?), you may be able to swap on a slant-6 choke lever to solve your problem. otherwise, you're looking at custom mods to make the choke work correctly, for example see here.

well, it was indeed binding as you prescribed. i loosened the bolt holding the choke to the heat stove and was able to get the choke plate to move freely. im going to check the idle speeds and timing in the morning. thanks for the prompt reply.
