| Post subject: | 8-3/4" Oil Seal problem |
Hey Folks, I believe I have the oil seal Leaking on the axle shaft - Not the one in the axle tube, but the one between the "Axle Plate - Where the adjuster is and the Bearing. Question is, I believe I will need to slice off the collar, cut off the bearing to get to and repleace this seal? correct. If I do all of that, then I will need to press on a bearing. 1. does the new bearing kit come with said seal? 2. does the new bearing kit come with a new collar? 3. Do you believe it would be time to put in the green bearings if I go this far on said project. 4. does the green bearin kit come with the said seal / collar? The actual bearing is in good shape now, and makes no noise, just small leak out of the adjuster - Replaced the axle tube seal and the Flange seal - I know it's not those. Greg |

Ha! It just so happens I'm going to be replacing the inner seal on my 8.75 in a couple of hours! According to my shop manual, if any oil or grease is leaking past the outer seal, its the inner seal that is causing oil to leak. The only function of the outer seal is to keep the grease in and keep dust and water out of the bearing. If you still want to replace the outer, then yes you have to remove the bearing. Its been awhile since I had the bearing replaced on the drivers side, but I think the shop was able to some how press the coller off and put it back on after replacing the bearing (and seal). I'm not a fan of the green bearings, only because they are roller bearings and don't take side loads as good as tapered bearings. |
