Post subject:  8 1/4 question

If I were to buy a 8 1/4 rear out of a Dippy, and it had the 2.26 or 2.45 ratio in it. Would I be able to buy the MPP sure grip that they sell and bolt some 3.21's to it? I know that the open carrier wouldn't work, but assuming I replaced it with the sure grip everything should be kosher right?

Oh yeah, and is an M body rear too wide for a Dart? Or will the width be OK?

Thanks

The 8 1/4 rears with ratios higher than 2.45 used a special carrier. You can't put any gears lower than 2.45 in those rears.

M-body rears are the exact same as F-body units (same cars, different sheet metal) It should fit if you relocate the spring perches and use the correct ones.

He can put 2.76's to 5+?!?!?!? in the rear if he buys either an carrier from an 8.25" 2.76+ rear, or a new sure grip carrier (pre-1997 I think).

Good luck,

Yeah, that was my question, I may not have worded it well. If I replace the open diff with the MP sure grip I can use any ratio right?

Yes, but make sure the sure grip is for a pre-97, there is a change in the 8 1/4" stuff about that time (the MP catalog usually will list one for 96 and under, and one for the truck guys 97+)...

Yeah, there is a $100 difference between the 97+ SG and the 96- SG.

Ooops sorry, I didn't see the part about you planned on changing the carrier. I guess I should have read more carefully.

Anybody know if a Dippy rear is too wide or not?

I believe they are about 3" wider overall between the axle/wheel flanges. If you want to run late model Mustang rims, this could work out fine since they have lots of backspacing. With stock Mopar rims, it probably would not work unless you have really skinny wheels/tires.
