Hello all, I am a new member. I have viistited the site frequently in the past, and finally decided to join. I have collected Valiants for years and still have quite a few sitting around. I was a subscriber to the old slant six magazine and still have all my copies, they are an invaluable source of info. I have been unable to pursue my slant six hobby for several years but I am finally at a point where I can begin to play with the Valiants again. I love the old valiants for the obvious reasons, the driveability, ride, durablility, but what I really like is that they are an excellent base for customizing and upgrades. I like having a unique vehicle. My unique vehicle is a 1964 4dr. Valiant 225. The engine has been rebuilt. I raised the compression a bit and switched over to the two barrel Carter. The suspension and drivetrain have all been rebuilt. I picked up the small bolt pattern ralleys and installed them with new tires. It drives and runs great. I got rid of the bench seat and installed a split bench seat from an Aspen statin wagon. This is as far as I've gotten with the car. I need to start on the electrical system. I have installed the later model alternator. I purchased but have not yet inslalled the Pertronix electronic adapter for the distributor. I also purchased the hotter coil that they offer. Any insight or tips into how well this items work would be greatly appreciated. One BIG problem with these cars is the lack of a fusible link or circuit breaker. I have had two meltdowns on two different cars. Any advice on the best way to rewire to include the above items would be very helpful. I also intend to do quite a few upgrades such as AC, relocating the battery to the trunk, etc. so I need to keep this in mind. Thanks for any advice........ DLC |

Welcome on the board! Your '64 sounds like an interesting car, and I hope we'll hear about your others by and by. The Pertronix items generally have a good reputation; my favourite electronic ignition changeover is the HEI upgrade. More special tricks and gadgets I like are the Fuel line mod and the Electric choke kits. Note that the factory did include a fusible link in the main A-1A circuit starting in 1963. The '60-'62 models don't have them, but the '63-up cars do. You'll find the fusible link attached at one end to the large stud terminal on the starter relay, and at the other end to the bulkhead disconnect on its way into the car. Perhaps at some point in the past a previous owner replaced a blown fuselink with a solid bit of wire on your car? |

Thanks SlantSixDan for the reply. I have noticed the device attached to the starter relay and did not realize that it was a fusible link. I missed that when going over wiring diagrams. I will look and make sure they are still there, but I think I had meltdowns even with them in place. I went to your lighting website and picked up some good info there. I will also be doing the fuel line mod, I have had problems with hot starting and figured that was the problem. I went back and forth on which way to go on the electronic conversion. I am going ahead with the Pertronix on this car. |
