A while back I bought an 8 3/4 A-body rear that came with 2.76 gears. I was going to put it in a small block Valiant, but I have since sold the car and kept the rear.

I plan on making a slant six my next project. I'd like to do an Offey intake, 390cfm carb, stock or mild cam, 9:1 compression ratio and dual exhaust.

My question is, do I really need an 8 3/4 for a setup like this? Would a 7 1/4 be able to take the abuse?

Need? No. Be better off down the road perhaps? Yes.
If you have the 8 3/4" and it's in decent shape, run it.
You may not need its relative strength, but why not use the piece? It would be one more thing not to worry about.
And if you did decide to go hog wild later ...

The car will hook & handle better with it also. And it will add to the value. And if your /6 makes any power it may be needed anyway. Its also easier to find parts, gears & posi trac for also.

7 1/4 rears can't take much abuse at all. I had one behind a mild 318 and it started to cry. If you've got an 8 3/4 rear you may as well use it.

If you're lucky, the last 3 numbers on the 3rd member are 742 or 489...no parts are available on the 741 housings if they go "BOOM."
