Slant Six Forum :: Torque and Max HP RPM ranges for /6

So if I am climbing a hill towing a trailer I want to try and keep it at 170 ft/lbs torque @1600 rpm ? I have a 4 speed manual and in 3rd that is like 50 miles an hour... it sorta works.

I am working on getting more power out of it.
Would like to install a 2 brl carb soon.
Right now messing with timing and going to put a 'blaster' coil in it.

But ya got to ask yourself how far you wanna go before just putting a larger engine (like a 440) in it

I am having a bit of trouble finding some information on my /6. It is a bone stock 76 /6 in a Dodge PowerWagon W100 4x4. It is a one barrel. I believe it is has the nice forged crank in it. What I want to know (roughly, donâ€™t need any absolutes) is: Max Torque RPM range Max HP RPM range And where the engine redlines Thanks, Craig

The stock ish numbers are about: (SAE Net for '76) 100 hp @ 3600 rpm 170 ft/lbs torque @1600 rpm I have yet to get to the redline with a 1 barrel, it will run out of breathing space about 4000 rpm depending on weight of the vehicle, gearing, etc... It wouldn't take too much to get a little more out of the engine, depending on your abilities. -D.Idiot

That's ratings that current 2.4L is capable of. 150hp 5200rpm 167 ft-lb 4,000rpm But what sets other engines apart is straight sixes is pulling power at very low rpms 1600rpm max torque is very nice. Cheers, Wizard

What does the torque curve of the stock slant size look like? I mean like a graph of idle to 4k or somesuch.

But ya got to ask yourself how far you wanna go before just putting a larger engine (like a 440) in it I'd keep it a bit above 1600--that way, when you hit a hill and slow down, you start coming into the torque peak and not falling below it. But it sounds like you could cruise in high gear at say 60, and if you hit a hill, a downshift won't bring you to a halt (assuming you mean 3 is the gear below 4th, and it's not a 3 spd tranny with a granny gear).

I agree with the rpm, 1600 rpm at max torque is NICE but lack of straight sixes in newer cars (15-20 years) except BMW but that expensive to maintain for BMW. Yet, can have good gearing that 3200rpm at max torque is fine as well but that hurts the MPG. Set of longer intake runners would help some on 4 cyl engines. Been done, look at PT & stratus intakes sometime. Cheers, Wizard
