I blew up the dart about a month ago driving on the Angeles Crest Highway. Started to pull the engine and ran across this after removing the starter.

Here's the other hole in the oil pan.

While looking through the hole in the block, I can see the cam resting on the crankshaft.

I think I've seen about 3 pictures like that before. for some reason number five takes a dive and you throw a rod.

how many miles were on him and what was your oil pressure like?

I think a little welding will fix you right up there.

Phil is right You can probably pick one of those up in SoCal Pronto In a Bone yard or off the Forum.

The guy at autozone said this is an easy fix with stop leak and JB Weld :D

I've already got a motor ready to go. I sold my A100 van to a friend who didn't want the slant six so that's what I'm putting in the dart. I do need to find a new flex plate since the bolt holes got egged when the crank seized. A lobe of the cam seemed to cause that as well as shearing off one of the flex plate bolts. Torque converter might be roached as well.

Wowzers! This reminds me of a diesel block found in diesel locomotives. Each cylinder has an inspection plate on the block that can be removed to inspect the crank. That must have made a nice sound!

I am not sure why the Cam would break unless something hit it, or cause that much damage if it broke first. Think you threw a rod and something hit the Cam.

Maybe the timing chain broke and stopped the Cam and it broke?

Actually I never took picks... but I was climbing a mountain here in Colorado. Had my little truck camper hooked up. Some stupid 16% grade that goes on for like 30 miles. Nothing special here...

And 'something blew up'

So I get out and look. The water pump shattered! :?:
I mean totally shattered! I have NEVER seen that before.

And after that the fan sliced through the radiator and landed in the grill on the other side.

After trying 'stop leak' I gave up and had it towed home

Saw a customer come in to the parts store I was working at one day and he handed me a bent up fan w/ the snout of a waterpump attached. I asked him how he managed that and he got a little irate; apparently it was a brand new water pump he had purchased the day before and the whole thing had let go while he was taking an on-ramp. He got a little more friendly when I told him it would all be covered by warranty.

Notice how the crank journal is black. That indicates a oiling problem, or atleast it got hot from a bearing that turned. The rear rod journal seems to always be the one to do this on the slant six. It could of been run out of oil at some time and caused damage to the rod bearing or the oil pump could of quit. But it probably caused enough heat that it weakened the rod bolt & then it breaks & goes site seeing on the out side of the block.
