Is the coil supposed to be perfectly parallel to the reluctor? The last I recall looking at distributor the coil was closer at the top to the reluctor then the bottom.

Hmm last I recall mine was quite a few thousandths off, I remember it was visible just by eye. I'm suspecting some possible ignition issues and this poped into my head.

Post subject:  Nothings perfect...

I have lots of OEM and remanf cores laying in my garage and not even the OEM reluctors are pefect. I have even found that some later reluctors are sloppy enough to have one or two "teeth" that are a bit longer than the others...so in essence when setting the air gap those teeth can be .008, but 4 others might be closer to .010-.012...

If you really have to have it "on the spot", you can grab several distributors and find the best parts to make one good one (sorta like hipo engine building when selecting your components).

Another thing that doesn't help is the pickup is motivated by the vaccuum advance arm (except in the 1981+ ESC distributors), in a few instances the pickup can be a bit loose, or tilted at an angle due to some sloppy tolerances/ assembly QA...
