Any tricks to pick up a few extra horses from the 225 with out spending too much money?

Probably the best "bang for your buck on a budget" would be to swap the intake and carb for a "Super Six" setup (2-bbl). These are pretty inexpensive and easy to get from junkyards or eBay.

Next would be either to have the head shaved by .050 to .100 thus raising the compression ratio; or else change the rear axle ratio to a steeper set of gears (many slant six powered cars had a 2.76 or 2.94 gearset to help with fuel economy and highway cruising).

The 2 bbl and the compression ratio change may actually net you more MPG along with the horsepower increase. The gear change will give you a "seat of the pants" feel of power but probably lower your MPG.

How much does it cost to shave the head? I have never had any experience with that. As for the intake and carb what kinds of prices are we talking. I'm will to spend a couple hundred dollars 500-1000 at the most. :D

Shaving the head will first off require the purchase of a head gasket set. If you have the equipment to remove the valves yourself, the machine shop I deal with charges $35 for a shave involving a single cut. When I had 0.055" taken off my /6 head it required 2 cuts and they charged me $50. If the shop has to disassemble the head for you, it will cost more of course. If they do that work for you, have them freshen up the valves and add a 3-angle cut to the seats. Go for an improved cam. I used Comp Cams 252-M with satisfactory results.

This will keep you in your price range.

Mike

When I had my head done it was almost $500 for cleaning and magnifluxing, 0.100" shaved off, valve job, new valve guides, one new valve, reassembly, and the gasket set. I took it to them disassembled. You should easily get a super six and a cam for the rest of that $1000.

The shop I use gets $45 for a 6 cylinder head. And $45 to shave the block. I thought it was a deal.... Did my own valves....Tanked it....and knurled the guides. I know it's not the best, but it was free. :)
Bought a $60 spring compressor and assembled myself. It's not easy, but doing stuff like that yourself can save you a heap of money.

Hey.....Can't you get a great nitrous setup for $1000????

There are many nitrous systems available at swap meets in a wide range of sizes and prices. I purchased a complete 250 HP plate system for $100.
I would not reccommend using anything larger then a 125 HP system on a slant with stock pistons.

As a true tightwad, I would start with a tune-up first. I Like the Bosch Platinum plus two spark plugs. Get some performance wires. That is, if it is a daily driver. Then add a high flow air filter. These will help later as you do the milling, cam etc.
