Post subject:  Floor shifter for cable shifted trans?

Does anyone know if the floor shifter from a '64-'65 Dart would work with the existing pushbutton cables in a '63 Valiant? I also have a column shifted '65 and have the same question. Thanks - Michael

I don't think the cable from the push button unit can be used with the floor shifter. I know the length is different, and I think the shifter ends are different, also. You could use the column shifter, or the floor shifter, to replace the push button unit, by using the correct cables for the floor shifter or column shifter. You would also have to use the 65 valve body in the trans.

Don't know about Valiants...but a push-button is a push-button. A floor shifter could be made to work with a pushbutton tranny, because I've seen it done. But......
It would take some degree of fabrication, as the cables are different lengths(as mentioned before). Also, the the valve-body on push-button cars are different in the fact that before it goes into park; the tranny has to enter Neutral. The valve-body has to either be modified to accept both positions seperatly, or try to find some sort of interchange with a later model. I know that a post-65 727 vlave body will not interchange with the earlier units. I'm not sure about the 904's.
My .02....

You have to use the '65 valve body as it is the only one that is both cable operated and has a parking gear detent. Pushbutton trannies have a separate cable for the parking pawl and later models are operated by rod style linkage. Aftermarket floor shifters are available for later models and they are cable operated but they mate to the gear selector lever with a bracket - completely different setup.

Post subject:  65 valve body

I used a 65 trans in my 61 valiant - so I swapped out the 65 cable shift valve body. If you would like a 65 valve body to use with your cable floor
shift, send me a PM.

As to some of the above posts.........
65 is a one year only valve body.
The cable 65 system still used the 2 cables, one shifter, one park.
65 vavle body will swap to a earlier 62 and later pushbutton trans,
(can not say for sure on the early castiron case 727).
If you do not use the 65 valve body with the 65 floor shift or 65 columm shift
it will burn up the trans since it lines up the valves a little differant
inside the valve body on the push button types.
Tried to put a 64 valve body in my 65 trans once, trans burned up
in about a week........

Talk to Steve at Imperial Services 989-652-6309 He has cables, shifters, conversions, and other stuff, I just recently spoke to him about 63 64 65 questions and was very helpful, didn't have a problem as the amount of questions that I had was quite extensive.
