ok so I know my choke isn't working right. Every time I go to start my new baby early in the morning, I have to go through a series of four cranks. Each crank, I have to pump the pedal 3-4 times. Finally by the fourth crank, she stays running. Something's clearly not right with this procedure.

I recall I should pump once or twice, that should activate the choke, I crank, she starts.

People who know, please tell me what to check and/or replace and how, since I'm no whiz at carburetors.

Could this also have anything to do with the fact that my mileage seems overly crappy right now? I can practically see the gauge lower every time I start the car - and that's not a happy feeling.

You just described my starting procedure to a tee. My car is a 74 Duster. I was beginning to think the problem is with the carb not keeping fuel in the bowl or the float set too low. I didn't really consider the choke not working properly. I will check it for sure tomorrow morning. Let you know results.

The '73-up electrically-assisted remote chokes are even more persnickety than the '72-down non-electric ones...and the '73+ ones are non-adjustable, into the bargain.

Do yourself a huge favour and put on one of the Electric choke kits. Number 1234 for your '74.

Also do the Fuel line mod, and make sure the correct thick gasket is in place between the carb and intake.

thanks guys. thoughts on the mileage? or is my car just 37 years old and i'm not used to seeing the gauge dip?

Sorry I was unable to do what I said I was going to. The next two days after posting, I had to be at work way earlier than normal. Couldn't check it.
