Post subject:  Best exhaust configuration for Dutra Duals

I scored a manifold on Ebay from the man himself. Now, what's the best way to incorporate it with the exhaust system? Y-pipe to single outlet? Is there a magic number on the length of the Y-pipe? Duals all the way???

I'm working with a 71 D100, so have lots of room.

Thanks,
Joe

Congrats. I got mine some years ago. I got duals all the way back. The only thing I might should've done is to incorporate an X pipe or an H pipe. I understand doing this will cut down or eliminate the resonance I get at about 50 MPH.

I honestly think the resonance is behind the mufflers, and the X pipe will not likely help you much. Somebody makes a tip that is tunable that can tune out those resonances that set up between the end of the pipe and the muffler. Does anybody recall who makes this tip? You can put disks in the tip to change the tuning. I have duals from the down pipe on back with no mufflers at all because of the turbo, and while it is loud, it does not drone at highway speeds the way they can do sometimes. I used stock 340 exhaust. I used to know what size that was, but no longer remember. The bigger pipes drone worse.

I don't know about tips, but SuperTrapp mufflers are tuneable.

If you can still get it, the header pipe from a Volare goes down from the stock slant exhaust manifold, and under the engine to pass down the passengers side of the car. You could combine this for the one side, with a stock tail pipe and muffler from an A body, and then have a custom header pipe built from your front Drutra to the stock A body pipe and muffler. Just a thought.

So the consensus is to keep the pipes separated--truly dual-- all the way back?

The people I talk to said true duals don;t really buy you that much over a bigger single pipe, but I think the duals look cooler, sound cooler, and have at least the potential of being a little calmer sounding at highway speed if you don;t go over 2" diameter with the tail pipe behind the mufflers. I ordered stock 340 pipes from a guy who advertizes in Hemmings out of PA. I asked him to not bend the front two feet of pipe, and he was happy to oblige. He bent everything from the tranny cross member on back.

If you search you will find considerable info on 2 into 1 setups. I think Rock used this on his truck.

Think 1.25 primaries about 28"long entering a Flowmaster Y then a 2.5 or 3"tailpipe.

Sandy---I'm assuming you meant 2.25" primaries?

since he is working on a D100, the later model trucks (82 I KNOW for SURE) is this way as well, and you can probably get the "under" pipe for the truck @ the JY.

that's a way to do it.
