Post subject:  Lightest factory SL6 car

I having searching for this info but can't seem to find it. What I am looking for is the lightest car that came from the factory with a SL6. I think it was the Dodge colt but I don't really know. The car will get COMPLETELY gutted, I would like to get in the 1500lbs range ready to race

The Colt was made by Mitsubishi, with an engine around 1.5L.
I think the lightests factory-slanted cars would be early Valiants or Lancers, with shipping weights around 2600 lbs. Getting either down to 1500 lbs would take some serious surgery.

Oh, and don't forget the added weight of roll cages, fire extinguishers, harnesses, etc.

I took a quick look through "The Plymouth & Desoto Story" (Don Butler).

The 62 V-100 2 Door Sedan weighed in at #2480

By 1966 the same sedan weighed around #2800

1968 Valiants - #2660

1970 Duster /6 - #2790

1974 Scamp - #3010

1976 Volare Coupe - #3285 (in V-8 trim)

For reference: 71 Sport Fury Brougham Wagon, seats 8, 440 V-8: #4325

The Feather Duster option was rumored to take about 200 lbs off the shipping weight of a standard Duster, but I'd sure hate to see one of these (somewhat rare optioned Dusters) cut up to make a drag car.

Remember.... anything goes in SL6 racing, you can run any car as long as it is powered by a Slant.
Many racers are using the later Mitusishi cars and slamming a SL6 engine into them.

Lot of these were fed a V-8 on the cheap...sadly that gives back the 200lb advantage, and the 76 duster is already about 250 lbs heavier than the 1970-1972 Duster, so no real advantage there...

My 1967 Valiant 4 door Signet, with a full load of gas and a 240 lb driver weighs in about 3000 lbs....

I would like to advoid cars that might be considered rare or collectors cars since I will be chopping the heck out of it. I might just use a 240sx shell or some other car simlilar.

MANY people are throwing away 60-66 Valiants and Darts these days, even nice ones. I would not hesitate to look for one of these that has a ratty interior but decent body and get to choppin'. If you want to go really cheap, get a 4dr.

I have probably seen 10-20 in the last year that I would make a racecar out of and they probably got scrapped or are sitting in someone's yard.

Best way is to look in AZ, CA, OR, WA, TX - on the internet and post on this site. Rust free, but not worth restoring due to the oddball nature of these cars.

You are going to be hard pressed to get anything into the 1500# range. 2500# is doable with an early A though. :shock:

One thing to consider is that several (most/all?) of the bigger Mopar shows require the car to be "Mopar Bodied" to enter the race class. Tom and Leighton Drake have run into this problem with their Simca.

If you're just looking to build a cool, light race car for local bracket racing it is no big deal. If you are planning on entering a certain class to run at Mopar shows, then you may want to be more careful in the chassis you choose.

I saw a chart on Moparts that has engine weights,and it states that the slant six and 273-340 V8's weigh the same, is this true? If so, wouldnt you actually drop weight by going with a 340 w/ aluminum intake,aluminum heads,headers.....etc...??? :?:

It's my understanding that the small block weighs about 50# more than a cast iron 225. I don't remember where I got the information but I believe it was Allpar.
