Post subject:  Carter 2 bbl throttle plate

Greetings, I understand some people have had idle, or cold idle issues with the Carter 2 bbl due to two little holes drilled in the throttle plate. I believe this is only on the Carter bbd for 318's. Is this an issue I need to consider when looking for a 2 bbl for a Super Six set up? Thanks

I had a 318 bbd on my dart with the two holes and it really didnt like the cold but my biggest concern was that it wouldnt idle below 1000 rpm,I swapped it out for a super six bbd and it runs and idles much better now and seems a little bit better now that the weather has turned cold during startup in the morning.

Post subject:  Can fill...

I have seen a few methods that have been used to close that hole for various purposes, just so long as the "repair" doesn't become dislodged and sucked into an intake valve/chamber you should be OK. My current favorite is using a mig welder and making a quick tack to seal it shut (not long enough to build up heat and warp the shaft). I have seen some other methods that are 'not my favorite' on other carbs like JB Weld, solder, drilling and using a small bolt or pop rivet.

good luck on your hunt, and make sure not to overlook the 318 carbs as a cheap source of possible replacement parts for the super six carb if the price is right, and you don't want to do the fill job...

I have never had a problem with a 318 carb, with the holes.Old wives tale. The early 318 carb is actually my favorite for the Super Six set-up.

I also used 318 BBD's for years with no problems. They may need just a little more patience tuning them.

"Old wive's tale" it is not. Depending on the particular carburetor and its calibration, those holes will often prevent the engine from idling below around 1000 rpm unless you do something ridiculous like retard the base timing to 10° ATDC. You can back the idle speed screw out so far it drops onto the driveway, and still enough air flows through the holes to keep the engine speed higher than you want it. That's not "old wive's tale", that's reality.

Not all 318 BBd's have the Holes there - Some of them are incredibly close to the super six carb Except for 3 things:

1 ..089 Jets instead of .086's
2. Thinner Metering rods
3. Larger venturi

I am specificaly speaking of the later BBd's Say 76-and newer.

There are 2 types Dont forget.

I believe the older ones have the Holes in the throttle blades.

My bbd was a later high top/tin top carb and it had the holes and reacted just as Dan desribed.

I looked! One throttle plate has a nip taken out of it on the edge. No holes. It is located near where one on the idle screws come in. I cleaned this carb up and am waiting for warmer weather to bolt it on and try.

How can I post a pic here?

I just put a later model 318 BBD on my /6 and cant get the idle down. however performance got a huge kick in the a$$!!! I'm really not in this car for fuel economy but drivabilty is a factor and a high idle will bug me.

I use a 66-69 BBD for a 318...no hole,,,no emmisions and no idle issues. It came from NAPA cost $120 and ran like a champ right out of the box.
