I have a Comp Cam 252 Hyd. cam and would like to know if it will funtion servicably as a solid cam with the earlier lifters, rocker arms etc. ? The cam is new but not returnable (don't ask!) Thanks - M

Not really.

Hydraulic cams don't have the gradual begining slope in the cam lobe to take up the valve clearance.

Been discussed in detail, see here.

That pretty much answers my question, thanks for the link Dan! I still get pretty turned around when I am lookin' for answers to questions other folks have asked!

I'd go for it. It would make you pull almost all of your hair in desperation for finding a good valve lash baseline, but once youre done experimenting it will work good.

plus you'd be getting a faster lobe ramp rate... if you install the cam advanced like 4º and use the fast ramp thing you might pick up something there... I run a hyd lobe profiled cam on my car, I run tight lashes... .2 mm intake and .35 mm exhaust, (yeah, almost zero lash, not a typo  ) and it works great. It's a little "bitter" on the low end but then again I was using it with 3.07 gears.

Back in the late 60's we were doing this to 340 engines and the cams servived. we did run a tighter lash, but these were race engines and were not driven on the street. And rebuilt every season... some one has to experiment some time.......................

After reading all of the info here I began to suspect that the cam I dropped into my '63 Val was a hyd. grind as well. The lash needed to quiet the "clacking" was beyond extreme! This cam was an unknown grind from a non-op vehicle. The engine is still a touch noisy but is freakishly powerful. I've driven this combo for six summers and have had no indication of impending doom. The upshot is that I plan to give this a shot! Thanks for the continued input (I was faltering.) M

P.S. Adjusting valve lash with the motor running is one of the true joys in life! "Pass the 3/8ths Doc."

on otherwise alike cams, the one with the fastest ramp is going to make more power and low end as well. If you don't mind your engine sounding (and referred to) as the diesel slant six, go for it!!! you're adding another 15º ballpark degrees to the advertised duration by runnin them hydro cams with tighter lash... Be sure to baseline them cold, then recheck them hot, or if you want to so only one operation (yeah, sure, you're gonna hit the sweet spot in the first time ... )
