Post subject: | Oil pump gear |
I know there has been a lot of testing on the hardness of the gears. Is there a harder oil gear available but one thats not harder than the cam gear? |

How hard is the gear on your cam? Hint: I have seen them as low as 19 and as high as 33 Rc (Rockwell hardness scale) If your cam has been nitride hardened, it should be in the 40 to 50 Rc range. DD |

Well the cam has been "double nitrided". I don't know the hardness value. Are there harder gears available or do we send a gear to be hardened? |

now that there greg is advice that will get nominated as David' Vice President! You've already gone down the path, might as well pay the extra 5% and get the right parts. I have shaved costs before and ended up spending it many times over because of it. BTW, please remind me of this later on when I am pinching a few pennies when I should be remembering to do it smart! I'll be using a new Melling pump. Looking at the gear it seems to be the same dark color as my new hardened cam shaft. Is this an indication that I already have a hardened oil gear? |

No; I tested the gear off my Melling and it was in the low 20's on the Rockwell C scale. |

Can this test be done without distroying the gear? A better question would be how is this test done? It looks like my gear is pressed on. How are these gears removed? Is there a special gig required to remove them and install a new harder one? It looks to me that the gear needs to be supported from the pump side and the shaft pressed out. Does installing a new gear require disesemble of the pump? One more thing. Doug offers one with a keyway and one without. Are there some pumps that have keyways or is the idea to cut a keyway in my shaft for a more secure fit? |

If you haven't done so, yet, I would suggest reading this article. http://www.slantsix.org/articles/oil-pu ... report.htm |

I read that article a couple of months ago and as I recall the conclusion was inconclusive. It seems that the problem is complex and doesn't yield to simple remedies. I'm sure a hardened gear is a good thing to have but from what I recall of the article, that in itself is no guarantee that the problem won't occur anyway. |

How is this test done? Does it ruin the gear?

Any Heat Treater or machine shop with a Rockwell tester can do the test, it does not harm the gear outside of putting a small dimple on it.. DD |
