| Post subject: | Cold Air Intake |
my truck has the connections for a cold air intake hose but the hose is gone, and i found one at the junkyard today, i should get more oxygen in the intake air and no problems with it being colder right? |

Why would you want a cold air intake,that doesnt deliver cold air? |

i meant to ask if the cold air would make the engine run too cold |

Cold air delivers a denser charge to the cylinders which is a good thing, and it will not cause the engine to run cold. That's the whole purpose of cold air induction systems, hood scoops, intake coolers, etc., etc. |

Your air cleaner should also have a provision for warm air from the exhaust manifold when the engine is cold. Make sure that's working properly, and you should be fine. |

I made one from a flexible downspout and some hose clamps. What does a stock one look like? |

also to get some more power you can add an elecric fan at the end of your hose and it will push air into the carb (I dont know how well this trick works on slants but i used one on a swomp buggy i built a while back with a 400 small block and it worked great) |

Just a point not to be a smart asz. You will not get anymore oxygen in the engine. You will get more lets say non heated air in to the intake. Air is made up 78 percent nitrogen and 21 percent oxygen and 1 percent of everything else. If the engine is designed for this type of setup it would seam to me to be more effenct with this setup. cool, i'll tape up the holes in it and put it in place. the hose looks like a black dryer hose, i think 3-4 inches in diameter |

I'm no engineer or scientist, but I do know that cooler air is more dense than warm air, thus, there are more air molecules in a given volume. That's why cold air intakes are used...

Right! Why does a car run faster in the spring and fall than it does in summer? The "better" air and what makes the air "better"? You run your car on the rich side of best power so as the air gets denser(and colder) more oxygen is going through the motor at the same volume(ie same rpm & load) and it picks up because it can burn more of the fuel with the extra oxygen that is now going through the motor. Nothing changed except the weather. You could reach a point where the motor actually goes lean because the air got that much better? Ever notice your car slow down in the later rounds at night....probably means you need to richen it up slightly. Tom |

Um...no. Such a setup will only screw up your idle and off-idle driveability and fuel economy, and restrict the airflow path at engine speeds much above idle.

There used to be "electric superchargers" on ebay all the time, maybe still is. It just proves that PT Barnum was right. |
