Post subject:  Axle shaft won't come out of 7 1/4
I put a drum on backwards with 3 backwards lug nuts and the driver's side popped out easily.
The passenger side won't budge.
I got a shop light and magnifying glass and looked for some kind of retainer inside the housing, but can see none.

Any tricks to getting this one out?

The stethoscope said the bearing on this side is noisy

Is being difficult to remove a symptom of a bad bearing?

There's no bigger tool that I can rent or buy?
Is this where other people just give up?

Should I get a larger person or a master of Bruce Lee's one-inch punch?

I had a junk axle i was trying to pull the axles out of to get all the brakes off and i tryed everything to try to get them loose and no luck i just gave up

You should be able to borrow a slide hammer axle puller from Auto Zone. Those usually do the trick.

Find a log chain big enough that you can bolt the end link to one of your wheel studs. Grab the free end, and "crack" it, like cracking a whip. The chain wil act like a slide hammer, and after a few cracks, the axle should slide out at your feet.

Take the drum off, put a wheel on, and whack it with a big hammer. Always works for me. :shock:

Ah ha! I called Schucks and they have such a tool!!

I'm walking over there now and will try this again, in a more fully-assed manner.

This is not an application for alloy rims....but perfect for bent 13" steelies.

May I suggest the strengthening powers of a few good ales?....mebbe with a few strong buddies?

Well, the puller was for a front-drive car.

I'll try the 3-lb hammer on a 13" rim.
It won't bend the axle to hit the wheel so far off the centerline of the axle?

Are you sure it's not a 5 bolt retainer :wink: :)
You asked if this was a symptom of a bad bearing. It could be that the race has spun in the housing, in which case you're probably going to be shopping for an entire unit.
Have you pulled the cover yet? You may be able to pry against the cross shaft to add some force.
Don't give up - you'll beat it sooner or later.

You can pry there?

The driver's side bearing feels good.
Do I need to replace the inner seal now that I pulled it?

If I can't get the axle out by mid-day tomorrow, I plan to put the axle shaft back in and drive the car this weekend to find a big slide hammer puller with a claw that fits a 5-on-4 bolts pattern.

It's my only car.

A wedge is a powerful tool...
Drive a wedge (cold chisel) between the end of the axle shaft and the spider gear cross shaft and that axle will pop-out. (or at least break loose enough to use one of the previously discribed methods for complete removal.
