I've got my 66 D-100 in line for a resto. The only thing I'm missing is the original 225 1bbl. It's a 3spd manual on the column, and I want to keep it that way. I have all the original trans/clutch parts. I do have a 1978 225 super 6 with the 904 still attached laying in the barn now.

Heres my ????? Will the 78 auto engine bolt up to my 66 manual trans?

The engine should physically bolt to the bell housing, but I'm sure you will have trans input shaft and crankshaft pilot bearing issues.

I know that the slant/auto trans combo in a pickup during those years used an adapter plate because Mopar hadn't come out with a slant-specific 727 housing yet. I have no reason to beleive you'll have any other problems than the one mentioned above.

(I suspect a more expert opinion will be posted soon.)

A 1978 engine in a 1966 application needs:

a 1978 flywheel equivalent to your current one (due to crank hole size in the flywheel itself), you may need a "problem solver" pilot bushing as some cranks are finished only enough for an automatic tranny..., everything else should bolt up....one thing that may get interesting is if you have the 11" clutch then getting the 1978 version isn't as common and the flywheel is kind of $$$...

I have a 225 that was pulled from a 70 D300. The only real difference that I can see between it and a 64 car slant is the oil pan and throttle linkage. For some reason the truck pan is a front sump (beam axle clearance?) and has the dipstick and tube in the normal car location (side of the block). Check your 78 crank for a pilot bushing, if it is there or at least drilled for one, all you need is the flywheel from the same year truck as the engine. If you find you need a front sump pan, let me know and I'll ship one to you since the one I have is useless to me. Hope this helps.

Howdy,
I am one of the old slant truck nuts here and can second much of what the other wizards have shared with you. I would add some though from my experiences with 63 - 66 utiline D100s, of which my latest is my '64.

No doubt about it, while the engine will bolt up, you may want some other goodies. Specifically, if you have an A745 3 speed, it would benefit you to have the cast iron so called "universal" bellhousing (in an old post here I have added its number). You need it to add in the larger flywheel, and this bell is the one that has the hydraulic slave and its fork mounted on the passenger side. I saved one of these bells and know where a perfectly good flywheel is you want to go that way. I chaneed to an A833 4 speed and assure you if you are getting started you may want to consider it...my truck is all original now except for that, and with a 3.91 positraction it turns 2400 rpm at 75...a far cry from the 3 speed 3.91 sound.

This poor truck has been sitting for the past ten years. The engine was supposedly stored in a safe place, that is so safe no one knows where it went. I guess it was stolen, dunno. I cant remember what kind of oil pan it had? guess I'll have to measure from the mounts. If it's different, I'll need the pickup tube also. I do have the original bellhousing and flywheel. I was hopeing they would work. I liked that 3 spd. Not sure if it's an A745 or what, BUT I DO know where an A833? 4 spd from a volare is????? Would that A833 work with the 3 on the tree linkage??? I'm just in the planning stages now, so I'm doing all the homework I can.

I thank you all for the great information. I will try to post some pictures of the progress like I did with my Duster, If I can figure out how. This is a cool old truck that deserves another run.

Hi slyder,

Well, I understand you liking the 3 on the tree...I drove mine 33 years and it always felt good. No the three linkage won't work on a 4..the 4 is a floor shifter which in the shifting give you an inner feeling of being a big dog!
Does your tranny have the band parking brake on its rear or do you have a cable set going to rear drums?

Yes you need a front sump pan and accompanying sump/screen. I can measure a dipstick for you, but really if you fill your crankcase from empty and file a full mark on any dipstick (slant stick) you will be fine. Feel free to PM me re. parts and as slant six Dan says, you really oughta get a factory service manual for the vehicle. It and this forum will get you through anything you will encounter. I say this because I can't imagine anyone doing more to a truck than I did and it was done with those 2 resources and the fearless approach. As in, "I may screw this up, but if so I can get some parts and do it again!" Oh, I will always take another 833OD if you want to trade around and so on.

Got the pm's, Thanks.

My 66 has a 8 3/4 with the parking brakes in the drums. It's a 741 chunk with unknown gearing, I'll check it later. I dont mind keeping the 3spd. Just want to know what I'm getting into with the 78 model year engine. I'll start measuring tomorrow.
