Anyone know if 5X7 rims will be a problem as far as tire clearance on a '72 Swinger? |

If you mean 15x7 check your back spacing, anything with 4, 4 1/4,or 4 1/2" will clear up to 215/60/15 tires no problem. On rear 4" will be tight to outside inner fender. I'm running 235/60/15 with 4 1/4 " on the rear of my dart with nice clearance......... |

yea....15X7...sorry for typo. Problem is I have (4) 15X7 and dont really know if thats too large to fit onto front even if I use the narrowest tire size avail for that rim. |

Just get a rough measure of the backspacing on the rim and see what you have. If you've got about 4" or a little more, you should be ok, even on the front. just put a piece of wood across the backside of the rim and measure down to the mounting surface and see what you have. MJ |

I have 15X7 with 4 1/8 backspace on my 73 Swinger with 225/60/15 Radial T/As on all four. The rims are fine, but the 225 is tight on the fronts, but not rubbing and working just fine. The back tires are great. I test fit some 15X7 with 3.5 back space first (what they had at a local tire place), and I could have run the 215/60/15 on the front, but I wanted to have the same size tire on all four, so I ordered the Cragar Smoothie 313 from Jegs to get the additional backspace I wanted. In answer to your question, the 15X7 rims should be fine, but the amount of backspace may limit your choice in tire size. |

Iv'e also been wondering what kind of backspace would be good in my -73 Valiant, when the front is so much wider than the rear. What different backspaces would be good to get the difference in width as small as possible between the front and the rear? |

I have 15x7 with 3.75 back spacing on my Dart, and I don;t like it nearly as well as when I had 15x7 with 4.25 back spacing. The issue is handling, not clearance. The stock Mopar cop car wheels with 4.25 back spacing was perfect. Handling was true, predictable, etc, etc. Not so with the 3.75. The problem is the contact point now sits out further in relation to the steering knuckle rotation center. There is another older thread undr my name here asking about back spacing in which one of the members posted a web site link that discusses this issue more deeply. Sam |
