Hi, new member here, I've been lurking for some time. I have acquired a 61 Valiant 200. Can anyone tell me how to determine what engine is in the vehicle? The previous owner says 225 CU In. Not that I doubt him but just want to make sure . Thanks Ed

Most '61 Valiants came with 170 engines, not 225s. The 225 became available late in the '61 model year, and of course the engine could've been swapped sometime in the last forty-six years, and most people nowtimes automatically think "225" when they see a slant-6.

What is the 7-digit number cast into the engine block on the driver's side?

What is the engine ID number stamped into the top surface of the block below the frontmost spark plug and inboard of the lower alternator bracket?

Can you easily fit your hand between the valve cover and the heater box with room to spare, or is it a tight fit?

Is the bypass hose between the water pump and the bottom-front of the cylinder head about 3" long, total, or about 1½" long, total?

Sounds like you actually have a 170.
