Post subject:  Sliding Yoke installation question

I removed my driveshaft to get it balanced. It is all cleaned, painted, balanced, and has new u-joints. My questions,

1) Do I grease the sliding yoke (inside or out) before I reinstall it? The FSM doesn't say anything about it, but it seems that if it is spinning, a little grease would be a good thing.

2) the FSM mentions a "hard rubber ring which fits over the sliding yoke is used to exclude road splash...". There was not one present when I removed the driveshaft. Should I get one before I reinstall, and is there a part # or source for one of these?

3) Should I grease anything else, like the the rear u-joint bushings that clamp on the rear end?

RDJ,

I never have greased the Silding yoke as it gets atf or tranny oil to lub it from the box itself.

There should be a rear seal at the back of the tranny to Seal out the road grime and keep in the oil - If there is not one there order on and install it.

Some of the seals are A sealk and dust boot in one. (OE EQUIP style.)

Some cheaper ones are just a seal with no boot.

I have gotten some sice seals with the boot from advance auto - they were federal mogul brand too. Thay had them for both the 833/727 and the 904 / 230etc.

Grease the u joints with the provided Grease Zerk, But no need to grease the outside of the bearing cups when they bolt to the rearend. - they do not move.

Just wipe a small amount of ATF on the outside of the slip yoke. Any time a oil/grease seal is replaced, it should be LIGHTLY coated with the lube it seals. This prevents the seal from burning out, before the seal gets lubed from splash.
