i have a 2bbl carter off of a 1966 273 V8 and another off of a 1976 (from what i'm told) super six 225.

i need to rebuild one of these for my super six conversion. any difference in either? which would be better?

I've made 225s run well with carbs very similar to both of these you're describing. The 273 carb will require some adaptation work (choke linkage), and the '76 carb is of more advanced design for a more precise fuel/air mix (and the step-up rods' travel can be adjusted, which is not the case on the earlier design). If I were in your position, I'd probably pick out the carb in better fundamental condition and build it up. Both of them probably need a rebush of the throttle body.

There's no prefab bushing, and this is a precision machining operation—not just a simple matter of removing a worn-out bushing and installing a new one. From the factory, the steel throttle shaft bears directly on the aluminum throttle body itself. With use and age, the hole in the throttle body gets wallered-out (a Texas term meaning "wallowed out") and air leaks in at the throttle shaft/body junction. The repair operation consists of carefully marking the placement and orientation of the throttle plates relative to the shaft and body, removing them, removing the shaft, overboring the throttle body, and installing bronze, brass or Delrin bushings to restore a tight fit that still permits free movement of the throttle shaft.

It's been years since I had one of these done. I used to patronise G&S Auto and Machine, who advertised the service in Hemmings and happened to be local to me. They charged about $35 to $45 depending on the type of carburetor, and offered fast turnaround. 303-795-1412; they may still be rebushing throttle bodies.

"Early" BBDs are approximately 1976 and earlier. "Late" ones are '77 up.

You will have to decide which carb you are going to rebuild first before you order a kit. The early one has at least a different accelerator pump.
There will be different gaskets as well for the 2 models, but make sure you check because I think there are at least 3 different accelerator pumps over the years, so there could actually be at least 3 different kits. I’d say if you check which accelerator pump is in the kit, you will probably have the right kit as usually they put extra gaskets in to cover different models of the same era.
Does the 76 have the tin top lid? 76 could be the early carb with the accelerator pump with the round tube shaft, so just check this isn’t the case.
