| Post subject: | How many quarts of ATF in a 904? |
I'm going to be doing some tranny work next week, fluid/filter and hopefully installing a TransGo kit. This week I'm trying to get everything together I will need. I have a Wix filter kit which includes the cork gasket, but after reading some posts here I will try to find a new reusable gasket. I think I will use Dexron fluid, but how many quarts do I need, and should I bother paying extra for synthetic? My plan is to just drain the fluid in the pan, and not try to flush the torque converter. And while I have it all apart, is a tranny cooler worthwhile to have in one of these cars? My last car, a Ford, had one and needed it. |

1971 FSM shows 17 US pints including the torque converter. If your not draining the converter I'd start with about 1/2 that and check the level. Remember tranny fluid should be checked on level surface, engine running, warm and after you have shifted through all gears spending 10 or 20 seconds in each including park and neutral. Check your converter for a drain plug - remove the inspection cover and slowly turn the crank. You don't have to do a fancy flush and emptying is easy enough if yours has a drain screw. I don't think a cooler is necessary for ordinary driving with typical /6 motors. The gasket isn't hard to find, just go into the dealer counter with a part#. |

the part# for the gasket is 4295875ac list price $13.70 for the 904 and 2464324ac list price $13.70 for the 727 also if you get this gasket you will need 14 new bolts part# 6036330aa list price is $.45ea.(they are a tiny bid longer than the original bolts and they have a washer made on them and if you don't get the bolts the gasket is prone to leaks) this gasket is a little bit thinker than the stock cork gasket |
