Be careful buying Comp cams. See here, and here and here and here.

i like Erson. i did have a "wrong drilled" cam from them, however. i was able to fix it, but your fitment may vary.

i would use a super six for a street car. you could always "upgrade" to a 2bbl holley via an adapter if the BBD wasn't doing it for ya'.

dutra duals would be a good upgrade for the exhaust. headers are available for many applications, but early A's are left out except for Clifford and maybe spitfire (new product).

the heads flow poorly in stock form. oversize valves and a good port job will do wonders for the head. while you are at it, milling for compression can be done.

the biggest bang for the buck, seat of the pants obvious change when you do all this would be to get some lower (numerically higher) gears. 2.93, 3.23 for a car with itty bitty tires...higher #s for others or with OD.

i think you will get a LOT more response if you let people know more about your combo...for example what your goals are, what car its in, how much $$$$ you want to spend.

alrighty.

you can go pretty fast for 3K if you have the capability to do the work yourself AND you spend your money wisely. (of course fast is a relative term)

you need to determine what rear end you have, and since its gonna' be a daily driver, how much performance can you live with (or without).

i think a SuperSix, a little compression, a mild cam, dual pipes and decent rear (think 3.23 range) would make a nice daily driver that can get out of its own way and be easy on the wallet now AND at the gas pump later. your biggest expense will be machine work. do some searches on here for cam info, milling of block and heads, oversize valves, dutra duals, etc....it will give you an idea of what is working for others. don't be tempted to try to go as fast as some of these guys, but do listen to them, and you will be rewarded with a nice ride that will be pleasant to drive and last a looooong time.

When I did my first slanter,(1995) buying all new parts my total investment was about 800 bucks. the car was a low miler about 10K at the time so the engine was not pulled apart. This is what was done.
Clifford Intake and shorty hedders, Y pipe into a 2 1/2 inch exhaust, Flowmaster muffler and a 2 1/2 inch tail pipe.
Holley 390 Carb
340 valve springs (changed with head on, clothes line trick through the spark plug hole)
stock cam, stock 2.93 gears
This improved the top speed from bearly 90 mph to 115 mph(thats the limit of the stock cam at 4800 rpm)
Driveability was greatly improved, sound at speed was sweet.
That was my starting point.
