I've got an oil leak that appears around the #1 runners on the manifolds. It bubbles out and is being sprayed everywhere. It's on the newly painted manifolds, coming out the exhaust flange (bad seal, my bad), running down the block, everywhere. I initially thought it was a head gasket leak. But since oil doesn't flow up, I thought it might be the valve cover. Problem is the area around the valve cover where the leak would be apparent is dry. This leads me to think the actual leak is either the cylinder rings or, as suggested by my boss, the valve seals. I pulled the spark plug to see if it was wet. It was. So oil is definitely getting into the cylinder from some where. Any suggestions to pinpoint the cause? I would like to be as noninvasive as possible in fixing this.

It's not your valve cover, your rings, or your valve stem seals (your boss does not know how engines work). Oil most certainly does flow up...from the block to the head, under high pressure. The cause is probably your head gasket. Wet plug might or might not be related to this problem.

In his defense, he's not a mechanic. But he does know more than me. I think he may have also been a little tipsy at the time too.
