Hey folks, got a ? I have a carb(Holley2bbl) which is in great shape. Brand new rebuild, got it from pick-a-part. Only clean thing under the hood. Anyway, it's been in a box on my shelf for about 6mths. My ? is, What is the best way to keep a carb that has already been used and has had gas in it. Can I spray the whole thing down with WD-40 or a silicone spray of some kind? Or should I just leave it alone and keep in a clean dry place? I would like it to still be useable if I should ever need it. |

Turn it upside down and drain as much gasoline out of it as you can. Then turn it back right-side-up and squirt a light oil (WD-40 is OK, I prefer Marvel Mystery Oil in a trigger-type oil can) into the fuel inlet and also into the bowl vent. A couple of tablespoons full should be enough- you just want it to mix with any leftover fuel to prevent the fuel from drying out and leaving a nasty sticky deposit. Work the accelerator pump until oil squirts out inside the carb throat, then add a little more to the bowl. Wipe down the excess oil from the outside, store the carb upright in a place where its protected from dust and moisture. When you're ready to use the carb, just put it on and go. The WD-40 or MMO won't hurt anything. |

It is is best to store the unit with the throttle in the fully closed position. You may need to use some light wire or string to tie the throttle down, to keep it closed. DD |

If I have a known good one, I do the above procedure and store in a ziploc bag...sadly in Oregon even a cool dry place is still fraught with ambient humidity that over a couple of years will wreak havoc on a pile of machined aluminum and pot metal....-D.Idiot |
