Hey,

I have a 904 transmission and when I shift to reverse, it takes between three to five seconds to engage. What could be the problem?

Thanks,

Ed

Yep, fluid is ok, and it only does it with reverse gear... should I expect complete failure soon?

Thanks,

Ed

Hi, Ed. Does it do this every time you shift into Reverse? Or only the first couple of times from a cold start? And, how long has it been since the bands and linkages were adjusted?

Hey Dan,

Everytime does it... last time bands were adjusted was around 2 years. If in the need of adjustment, is there a way to do it myself? (meaning if it's easy).

Thanks,
Ed

If it is doing it every time, and the bands were adjusted within the last two years...you probably are looking at worn/leaking servo seals, so sooner or later it will quit going into Reverse altogether and a rebuild will be needed.

The reverse application takes the most fluid flow and pressure of all the gears. Make sure the fluid and filter are clean.

After that, run the pressure checks as discribed in the FSM.
As noted, low main line pressure (caused by worn or hardened seals) could be the problem.

yea, time for a rebuild, If you want to sneek by for a few more months try Lucas Oil trans conditioner 1 or 2 bottles when changing fluid. It does work but again not the propper fix.

Could be internal leakage. No big deal. Let it idle in neutral before going into reverse. The pump doesn't work unless you are in gear or in neutral. I am not a tranny guy but my 727 has been like that for years. It is a daily driver and I usually have that problem first thing in the morning.

Not really a problem.
