Firm Feel or Steer and Gear?

Anyone have a preference? Both companies equal in quality and customer service?

Mancini and others have the 20:1 Gear Sets if you want to do it yourself.

Wow, the price has gone up. I think I paid @$120 for mine 3 years ago. It's an easy swap once you have the box out. Just remember to install new seals while you're there.

I think I would rather buy the whole box.

the flaming river box is advertised as 16:1, but someplaces say it's 19:1 and some people think it's actually 19:1 based on turns lock-to-lock......

I have tried and tried, but cannot think of even a weakly semi-decent reason to buy the Flaming River box. It's a lot heavier than the Chrysler box, it's expensive, parts can only be had from Flaming River for as long as they decide to keep providing them (and as long as they stay in business), and it's pointless because the Chrysler box is of excellent design. My experience and preferences are that the 24:1 Chrysler chuck is too slow, 16:1 is too fast and a tremendous pain in the neck on the street (and in the parking lot) even with a lightweight '62 Lancer with aluminum engine and not-real-big tires, and that 20:1 is durn near perfect.

I'd either install the 20:1 chuck myself, have someone do it for you, or go ahead and get a rebuilt 20:1 box from S&G or FF.

Can the slant 6 boxes be upgraded to bearings when you put the steering gear in if you do it yourself?

That "1963-up" info is one of many (many many) errors in the Mopar Performance literature, and it has been picked up and promulgated by everyone selling these parts. 1962 is correct as the first year the 20:1 parts fit. I installed the 20:1 worm and ball nut assembly in my '62 Lancer's original steering box and everything worked fine. It won't work in '60-'61 cars because those use a totally different Saginaw-built steering gearbox, but 1962 (and not 1963) was the first year for the Chrysler-built aluminum-body steering gearbox. Go ahead.

Anyone know where to get the bearings or bushings? PN's?

If your just gonna buy a box go to firm feel. I've found their customer service to be excellent. I also love their 16:1 box. none of my cars have ever come with power steering so it wasn't a big deal for me. they sell the gears you can install as well. buy from firm feel
