Post subject:  Clutch Pedal Help!

I'm trying to remove the clutch and brake pedals from one of my 62 Valiants so that I can swap in a single brake pedal for an automatic tranny. How do I get that huge spring off? I'm talking about the spring under the dash that goes from the clutch pedal to the front part of the pedal assembly frame. I tried pulling on it with pliers but it's too strong and I can't get any leverage when I'm on my back under the dash.

that spring actually is under tension while the clutch pedal is up. Is an effort reducer for your foot, more than any other thing. It's easier to remove with the pedals assembly off, you just pop down the clutch pedal and overtraavel it until the spring comes loose. Then you can remove the clutch pedal by removing one security ring and you can remove the brake pedal with wrenches.

Yeah, I could see that but I didn't want to remove the metal frame because that requires removing, or at least loosening the dash. At any rate, I got it all out and ready to go to its next home. While I was at it I swapped in the steering column for the automatic and as soon as the paint is dry I'll put the brake pedal for the auto tranny in it. That'll be relatively easy.
