| Post subject: | Offenhauser Valve Cover Questions |
If any of you might have one on your slant could you tell me if: 1. There are baffles built into the cover; 2. You modified the valve cover to use a PVC valve at one end and the oil filler cap (also vented to the air cleaner) on the other? 3. You've been satisfied with the quality of the cover. If someone wants to dress up an engine, they seem of much higher quality than the chrome ones I've seen. Thanks for your help. |

The Offy cover is very well made. You do need to make some modifications in order to run it successfully without compromising engine ventillation. See this thread. And yeah, the chrome covers all over eBay are junk from China. They don't even fit right.

I've got one of these old covers that I intend to use on my /6 when it's turn at a rebuild comes around. That's great info, Dan. Thanks for sharing! It's another one for me to print off for future reference. |

My cheapy Chinese chrome one fits with the right installation technique. You have to put in the bottom rail bolts first. It seal great as long as the gasket gets installed properly. Nothing likes to stick to chrome! I use 3M "Gorilla Snot" yellow weatherstrip adhesive. I let it dry with the gasket while doing my valve adjustments. As for the Offy? I am wondering if a breather cap off a Ford truck would work? PCV goes into the breather cap. IIRC the '77 400M? Those Offy's are puuurrdeee! |

No. You need to have an air inlet and an air outlet. The oil cap is the air inlet, you have to drill a hole and add a PCV valve as described in the previous link.

Well the dealer told me we no longer sell those good ones.........I was gonna paint my stocker black. I never knew the cheapies existed. Then I was at an all brand show and saw that cheapy slant cover! I think Offy should change their cover! 40+ years later and we are still building slants! I bought a new intake several years ago of theirs. It's on my van. Excellent quality! I bought it from Summit. |

My experience with a new offy cover onto a 65 /6 engine. I had to make some cutouts on the valve cover lip, where the raised bosses are on the drivers side of the head, otherwise the bottom outside of the valve cover lip hits the raised boss (knobby thingies) and the valve cover wont seat properly. The valve cover mounting surface was not flat - it was a little distorted. That made it a bit of a chore to bolt it down and I used a thick rubber valve cover gasket to compensate. It was enough that I was nervous tightening it down incase it cracked. I tightened it slowly and in a sequence as if I was tightening a head - it didnt crack and doesnt leak. Maybe with time it will flatten itself out? There was some warning in the box about casting and things not being exact etc. Bottom line though, it does look sharp and I would do it again. cheers ricki |

Mine doesn't have baffles. It does breathe some oil out of the breather. I keep a rag in there. I use the oil as rust preventive/preservative. |
