I've been thrashing around for 2 weeks now thinking I needed replacement engine, because the one in my truck is surely tired, uses oil and the oil light kept coming on. I replaced the oil pressure sender and the oil light problem seemed fixed, but I was still suspicious that the motor needed replacing. Until I plumbed an oil pressure guage onto it yesterday. This engine holds 55 pounds of oil pressure at anything abocve idle, and when hot maintains 40 at idle in drive. So now I think I could just reseal the motor to solve the oil consumption problem, because I think it leaks more than it burns. Is there anything special I need to know about resealing a slant? Here are some questions:

-I want to put a timing cover crank seal in it, so how does the balancer come off? Does it have a retaining bolt or is it a tap-on deal like a 250 cheby?

-I'll pull the engine out when I do it, so I'll put a oil pan gasket set in it. But what about the rear main seal...any hints/tips there?

-Where else does the slant tend to leak?

-I don't know what year vintage my motor is, is there a way to tell year of manufacture so I know what gaskets to buy?

Thanks. Davey

The balancer is pressed on, you need a puller to remove it. Any year gasket set will work, they are all the same with exception of the aluminum engine.

All you need is a universal balancer tool. They can be rented at just about any auto parts store with a small down payment. Use it, return it, and get your down payment back. :D

It is not necessary to heat the balancer. The end of the crank is drilled and tapped. Just use a balancer installer tool, or a bolt to draw it on. Do not drive it on with a hammer.

3/4-16 Not sure what length will work. I have several different lengths, just for that. You will also need at least one large flat washer.
