Post subject:  Cam centerline

I just received my Erson 270 cam and lifters today and every thing looks good as far as oiling holes and overall appearance.
My question is where do I find what centerline to install it at.I have the cam card and there is a note at the bottom that says 111+4.My Comp 264 installs at 106 centerline but Im not familiar with the way the Erson cam card is layed out. Any help or advice is appreciated and wecome.
Thanks

No matter what the cam card says, I would not install it at higher than 104 deg. 111+4 probably means it's 111 LSA and ground 4 deg advanced, so it would be 107 straight up. Again, that is still too far retarded. If it were my car, I would put it at 101 or 102.

Erson grinds their cams with 4º advance already "built in". You should centerline the cam as cam card says.

Lou can you explain how you came up with the 107 number from the 111+4 number.I would like to know so I can understand more about cam degreeing.
Thanks

I am just guessing since "+" usually means advanced and 111 is probably the LSA (same as centerline if cam is ground straight up).

I still think you should install it at 102 or so.

Lou ,I think your right about 111+4,I have been reading the cam card closer and understanding it a little more.
As far as dgreeing the cam with more advance, when I installed the 264 Comp in my Hyperpak 170 it fell in at 105.5 with a 4 dgree bushing, now Im wondering if I should have put in a 6 or 8 bushing. If I think I need more cam advance after driving it can I just tear down the front of the engine and install a different bushing or do I need to re-degree the cam?

Oh, I'm sorry, you have a 170. In that case, I'd degree it as the cam card says. I believe one of the reasons for more advance is the 225s small bore/stroke ratio, where the 170 has a high bore/stroke.

Yes, you can just put in a different bushing later rather than re-degreeing the cam.

Lou ,thanks for the reply but I think I confused you.The Erson cam is for a 225 that I plan on putting in my Dart.I guess I was comparing apples to oranges between the 170 in my Val and the 225 Im gathering parts for.
I would like to talk to you at a later date about head mods for the Dart engine.
Thanks
Mark
