Post subject:  let's discuss why this car is selling for this price....
Hi guys. I'm looking for y'all's opinion on why this '71 scamp is going for the price it is. It looks to be in great shape, and the mileage is reasonably low, not SUPER low, but reasonably. I'm finally selling my 64 Dart for around $2800, and I'm feeling lucky to get it, even though I think the car's worth at least $3K for it's cosmetic shape. And my Dart, minus a few repairs, is in nearly the same shape & mileage (95K orig miles).

Why do you think this Scamp is going for this price? I see early to mid 70's Valiants & Darts in nearly as nice shape going for a lot less.... Are the 71 & 72 Scamps in general more unusual?

Because of people like me who are young, in engineering (network engineering for me), and have way too much money than we know what to do with and can spend more on a car than its necessarily worth if we decide we really like it and want THAT one.

Plus its a super clean car with no rust anywhere. Its would be worth at least 6 - 7k to me as it sits just because of its quality. I'd expect to pay 6 -7k for a car in that shape.

1. Any item, whether a car or anything else, is worth exactly what a buyer is willing to pay for it, no more and no less. Nothing has intrinsic value, but only the value assigned to in in the market place by the buyer and the seller.

2. We have enough examples to conclude that Ebay is a separate market apart from the real world. It's an interesting phenomenon that I'm sure psychologists, sociologists, and economists would find fascinating.

unfortunately true. I was hoping there was some other reason like "Scamps are scare." Or "it has a V8". Something that would make sense to me. But obviously, it's just what people think it's worth. I'm still scratching my head. I love the car, but don't over $4K love it. It seems in general, the earlier Scamps in nice shape go for more money over Darts and Valiants of the same era...just weird to me.

Just to clarify a bit.........The bidding is at $4550, and there's 4.5 hours left of the auction, and the reserve has NOT been met, so the car IS NOT selling at this price. The car isn't selling until it meets the guys (unknown) reserve price.

I think what we see with this example is someone who thinks he can jump on the musclecar bandwagon and get big bucks because he knows that 383-powered 68's have brought big bucks. The tell-tale clue is here, cut/pasted from the ad; "My son is 15, and he and his best 4 friends are all going to have muscle cars for high school. Isn't that awesome!" As for me, I wouldn't fall for it. It might be a damn nice car for the age, but it's a drum brake, 318 car, and does not fall into the musclecar category.

because they had a cute jingle for them back in the day--- "that's why this lady drives a scamp!!!"


Plus since they have bud's in high school--- who is to say they are not bidding it up themselves.

not near as cool as your wagon by the way. did you ever find seat rails from a toad car? Later Lawrence

Thanks Lawrence. I found a pair for $90.00 but that was high for me. My bodyshop guys ended up making some seat rails that work just fine, they just aren't original.
