Is there a variable speed wiper switch with washer switch that can be adapted to work in my 62 Signet? In the dim, distant past, I had a car with the washer switch built in to the wiper switch; I think it was my 69 Dart. I would like to have this same setup on my 62 as I want the electric washers but I don't want to futz with mounting a button somewhere. I would be a lot more convenient and totally cool to just push the wiper switch to pump the washer fluid. |

That's going to be a toughie, because the '62 wiper switch isn't the same length as the '64-'66 wiper switch that has the push-for-squirt function you're after.

Too short I presume. The space where it has to fit is tight and the 62 switch has a long neck to fit in there. |

Yup, exactly...too short. You might be able to cobble up some kind of an extension shaft for the shorter switch...? Probably easier to hide a small momentary pushbutton switch under the dash... |

Or rig up something with a foot switch in the same location as the manual foot pump on the 62. I was just hoping to avoid the trouble. |

your signet didn't come with an electric washer, david? i figured out of all the cars the high-end model would've. Mine is electric and has a button under the gauge cluster on the plastic part of the dash to shoot the sprayers. I think I'm going to extend the hoses onto the wipers themselves so that they wash the whole windshield when them & the wipers go at the same time. -Allen |

I'd be really interested to see a picture, Allen. On mine there is no plastic on the dash except the bezel itself. There's room to put a switch next to the wiper switch but I'd rather not drill a hole in the bezel. |

I can sympathize with your desire to not make any modifications that show. I've a lot of experience with late-60s up switches, but none with anything before '65. Generally, the 2sp model wipers are very straight forward (1 wire for lo, 1 for hi), while the 3sp are much more complicated. IF a newer ('70s-on) switch w/ spray switch physically fits in the dash, AND it is the same type (2-sp vs 3/variable-sp, hidden vs nonhidden), you could use it provided you get the matching connector and just move the (female) pins from the old one to the new one using the factory diagrams to get it right. You then can run a new wire to the washer pin (NAPA had the pins, but I had to nag them to get them). If you've the dash harness out of the car it's easy to do change connectors w/o cutting or splicing. In general, mix & matching 2sp & 3/var sp, hidden & nonhidden is much, much harder and trickier. |

Sorry about the delay, David, I haven't been on the computer in a while. Here's a picture of the switch. Sorry it's not very good, but i believe that you get the gist. I know it looks kind of aftermarket, but it really wasn't in my great-grandfather's nature to change anything like that, and being as how the only thing that's really been changed over the years that i haven't done is the fluids, the filters and the muffler, i highly doubt it.  -Allen |

Windshield washers were optional on all A-bodies until '66 when they became standard equipment. Electric washers weren't available til '64.

Mine came with the rubber foot pump. Allen, I'd bet lunch that switch is an add-on; perhaps done by an independent mechanic or the dealer but certainly not by the factory. I might end up putting one in the instrument cluster, between the turnsignal indicator and the wiper switch, if I can find a suitable switch that doesn't look ridiculous. |

Agreed.(BTW the '62 Valiant/Lancer instrument cluster design makes me smile) |

If you have electric squirters, '65-'66 Dart, Valiant, Barracuda wiper switches should be the same (single or variable speed). If you have pedal-pusher squirters (or none at all), then '63-'66 Dart, Valiant, Barracuda switches ought to be workable. There is this new switch available from NAPA as Echlin WSWS6456, listed for "1962 Chrysler": Looks like a single-speed wiper switch to me, might or might not be the right diameter and/or stem length for other applications. |
