OK guys,

Dunno why I didn't think of it before, but I got in touch with the chrome plater I use for so called "show" bumpers, grilles and such and asked if the could or would do my timing chain cover and valve cover for the ole slant six. They said sure, and the price was pricey. (The show work is so good I have had people beg for my parts when they saw them at Carlile, as in "take mine and swap and I will pay....). When I said ouch, they said, well a lot of the Chebby guys don't want true show grade for the valve covers and timing chain cover, so we do a tad less grade for them. For what I that was a real doable price...less than the offys have been going for on ebay lately. I personally would rather have a seriously well plated mopar cover, but do admit to admiring the offys, too. Anyone else interested in having valve covers and timing chain covers, or oil pans chromed at a reasonable price? No, they are not in CA, just kind of a small family affair here in the east.

Sometimes I wish I wasn't such a sucker for polished aluminum. My arms certainly hate me for it!

I've checked out some plating shops near me that do bumpers, and most are willing to do tinware...for a price, like you say.
They usually have a base price for any job, so the more pieces that you take in, the better the deal. Still not cheap, but definitely nice to look at.

I've also checked out some shops that do powder coat. It is a little more reasonable...and you can get a variety of colors and finish textures. One of the better shops quoted me $75 to do black powder coat on my hood hinges.

For now, though, I'm sticking with the blaster and rattle cans on my tin. :)
