I snapped a belt on my A/C it took out my timing tab on the timing cover. I have thought that maybe I dropped in the distributor too far advanced last time it was out. I am doing a tune today and want to retard it. It pings really bad when I connect the vac advance so I have been running without it for since I planed the head in 2004. Slantzilla said it should run regular and not ping. It runs premium now and pings at high speed with the advance plugged in. Edit: which way do I move a tooth? |

Are you saying that you do not have a timing mark to go by? Turn the distributor body clockwise to retard or move the shaft/rotor counter clockwise to retard. It sure sounds like you need to review the curve in the distributor. DD |

Yep no timing mark. I don't have a replacement cover yet. It is a stock 72 model point dist. The points hold steady dwell. Low miles on it. 58K |

I took note of where the rotor was and then pulled the distributor. Cleaned it and did my points. moved it back and no start! This thing is a pain in the butt to pull and reset. I even put some teflon hitch ball grease on it to ease pulling and installing the distributor. It is hard to tell when you move a tooth. You have a PM Doc |
