Does anyone have any facts on whether the turbo axis can be anything but horizontal?
Oil drainage will have to be considered, but what about the thrust bearing?
Could it be mounted vertically, for example?

The turbo gets oil pressure from the pump but relies on gravity to return to the pan. That is the limitations on mounting. It is important that the oil return line be above the top of the oil in the pan.

You can re-index the scrolls so that the inlets and outlets are facing the way you need while still having the center section level; with the oil inlet at 12:00 and the oil drain at 6:00.

So thrust loading is not a concern?

As far as oil drainage, if the axis is anything but horizontal, will the oil pool on whichever shaft seal is lower with resulting consumption problems?

What if the drain is above the feed, causing the cartridge to fill with oil before being pushed out the return? Again, sounds like a recipe for oil consumption.

As I plan my installation, I just want to know how much packaging flexibility I have.

Also make sure your oil return line is at least twice as big as your oil feed line. The oil returning from the turbo bearings will be foamy and frothy and will need some room to gravity drain to the top of your oil pan.

You have a few degrees where it can be off a little. You do want it as horizontal as you can get it, though. The oil feed line needs to be about 3/16" to 1/4" while the drain line needs to be at least 2X that diameter (1/2" to 5/8"). The oil comes in from the top from oil pump pressure and drains out the bottom by gravity. It needs to drain into the block below the level of the turbo, so mount the turbo high. It also needs to drain into the block above the oil level in the pan.
