Post subject: | Anyone know how to use "PARTS INTERCHANGE MANUAL"? |
I bought the "CHRYSLER MUSCLE CAR PARTS INTERCHANGE MANUAL 1968 - 1974". The first problem I encountered is in trying to figure out which sport mirrors will interchange between years. Part numbers I get Ebay sellers to give me off their mirror bases don't show up in the MANUAL. What I suspect is that the numbers given in the MANUAL are for the actual mirror housing (not easy to get to the number without dismantling), but the bases have different numbers not listed. Not a good way to organize a reference book. If not both numbers, they should at least list the one most visible and accessible when checking for proper usage. Anyone know if I am missing something here, Jerry |

he is probably giving you the casting # if I have time tomorrow I will find my 74 parts book and look up the original # for you ( i'm assuming it is a 74 dart sport you need it for) |

The numbers that appear on parts of the mirror itself are casting numbers, not part numbers, though they're often similar/close to the part number in the book. Who is the publisher/editor of the book you bought? And, what level of interchange info are you after, and for what specific model(s)? Are you trying to determine what'll physically fit, or what will look exactly, precisely identical in every detail to a mirror that could've been installed by the factory on a particular year/make/model? |

Casting Numbers.... Well, there's the rub. Dan, the interchange manual is from MBI Publishing Company (www.motorbooks.com) and authored by Paul Herd. I do have a '74 parts book (digital version thanks to Dan) and that's what was causing the confusion for me. I was considering sport mirrors from a guy who said he pulled them from a '72 Demon. One looked odd, so I asked for the "part number". I checked the number against my parts catalog number and it did not jive. I next went to the INTERCHANGE MANUAL and found none of the '68-'74 mirrors of any type matching his numbers. That's when I began to notice none of the numbers I was getting from other Ebay sellers were matching my reference materials. I suspect his mirror is one of those F-body types that are found on Aspens or Volares (it mounts on the side of the door with two screws, not the flat top of the door) and might have been stuck on there by a previous owner. Other examples... "70 71 72 Dodge Plymouth Dart Duster Demon RH Mirror 3548620 68488" No such numbers in the MANUAL "67-70 Mopar Right Side Mirror Charger Coronet Bee GTX 2802 714" No such numbers (some very close, though) "Mopar Dart Duster Demon rallye racing mirror base 3548620" Again, no matching number, and the base appears much shorter in their photo than the in the one shown in the MANUAL. Dan, simply put, Aaron wants painted Sport (Rallye) mirrors on his '74 Dart Sport to complete the look. We aren't concerned with year-specific accuracy, just proper fit to match the existing mounting holes in the driver's door on the flat top. Purists we are not. His car has enough custom touches to negate any claims to "stock original". Aaron's budget won't allow for the $300-$400 sets we most often see, so I check out any other offerings that might be decent prospects. If nothing else, and for safety's sake, I was considering just adding a standard chrome round mirror on the passenger side where he has nothing now. If obtained at separate sources, I wanted to make sure I got a matching set. It appears that requesting numbers from sellers, in this case, will do me no good, since they aren't actually "part numbers" to cross reference. Therefore, let the buyer beware... Jerry |
